Executives of Smithfield Foods, a U.S. pork producer acquired in 2013 by a Chinese company, are exasperated by suggestions that Chinese ownership of American land is a threat to the country.

If anything happened to Smithfield, it would "devastate" local economy, a farmer told The Washington Post.
